We've all seen the dated senior portrait look: head slightly tilted, perfectly propped chin, and off the shoulder smock. Open yourself up to a new experience in photography that will capture more than just a beautiful smile. With back to school coming right around the corner, pick up some fun ideas on how to represent a variety of styles and personality types below with clothing, hair, make-up, setting, and prop options.

Girly Girl

If glam is your ideal, you can still achieve the look in a unique way. To complete your look, utilize structured curls that frame your face, a soft eye make-up palette with more muted, neutral tones, and a red lip stain. Choose a dress that suits your glamorous ways, but doesn't overpower the shot. Try a matching pop of color with a satin, solid red pump. For setting options, try a classic architectural staircase, the window front of your favorite local clothing store (with permission of course), or other backgrounds with metallic, reflective hues. A shot with depth may consist of a garden swing or flower bed (try loosing the heels and going barefoot for contrast!).

Southern Charm

Every Birmingham girl may have a little country side; why not show it off? Backgrounds of sunflower fields, rustic farm settings, clothing lines with wind-blown sheets and fabrics, or rocky streams can set the stage. For wardrobe, touches of denim, flowy sun dresses, and an unconventional cowboy boot (think red, metallic, vintage, or ornate), and soft make-up and hair hues highlight the vision.  

Athletic All-Star

If you have spent a great deal of time, enjoyment, and energy on a particular athletic field throughout High School, why not include it in your shoot? Not in just a pose in your jersey way, but a location or prop way.

  • Try high top tennies, a relaxed down hair style, and t-shirt paired with a tailored blazer and shorts while posing on a bleacher bench in an indoor gym for the basketball lover. Muted lights and a dark shade of lipstick will add drama to your shot. The combination of casual wear and structure will show more than just your athletic side. Try capturing an action shot while shooting a basket for a fun photo!
  • For the tennis devotee, try a wardrobe of a soft-colored sun dress and metallic wedge heels to contrast the background of the bright court. Utilize the pattern of the tennis surround netting to photograph on both sides, adding texture. Angular shots with your racket can give your photos a little edge.
  • The Softball diva can show off her glamorous side with a fabulous classic dress and pristine pumps while posing in the dug out. A shot of the back of you walking off the edge of the field, passed the outfield, could capture the distances and accomplishments you have and will achieve.

Funky Edge

If you have a more contemporary flare, explore settings with industrial touches: a city bench, manufacturing plant, or car garage are some examples. For hair and make-up, show off a smoky eye look with dramatic lashes and feathered, free-falling locks, or try a slick pony tail with a sleek straightened flow. A bold jewelry piece in a fun color can make a statement. Props like vintage cars, records, or musical instruments work well to add dimension and can help show off your interests.
